Doorway Pages: Providing Positive yet Short-Term Results for Your Site

Doorway pages are web pages especially designed to attract
visitors on your website by securing a high ranking on search
result pages of major search engines. They are also known by
several names such as gateway pages, jump pages, entry pages,
and portal pages. The name itself indicates that they do not
contain the content that your are looking for, but contains
several websites leading to the contents you are looking for.
They are standalone pages acting as entry points to other
websites. A search
engine optimization company may use this technique to
enhance traffic of your website. If you happen to come across
such a page, you will realize that such a page is a listing of
one-page click-through ads for a website or websites. To make it
clearer, let s illustrate it with an example. On a search
engine, you have searched for high-end mobiles. If you click on
a doorway page from the search result page, now, you end up
landing on a page which says, Click here for high-end mobiles .
As such, it acts as a platform for website advertisement. Though
many search engine optimization services use doorway pages as
shortcuts to securing high ranking, many see this technique as
unethical. It also in a way misleads the visitors. Just think of
yourself as visitor searching for high-end mobiles. Now when you
search for it on a search engine, you want to be directly led to
manufacturers or sellers dealing in high-end mobiles. But
rather, you are directed to a page which has a list of such
sellers or manufacturers. So the very purpose of using a search
engine is defeated. This is why major search engines including
Google discourage doorway pages. A SEO consultant may
still use it to secure short-term positive results for your
site.
