Using Boolean Search for accurate search-results
Author: Manish Shrivastava
The Boolean Search is developed on a Mathematical logic
developed by Charles Boole. In Inte
rnet Search Engine Optimization, the concept of Boolean
searching is widely used where most of the search engines and
online databases support the search mechanism using Boolean
operators. Boolean searches can help in finding the desired
information eliminating unnecessary details.
The Boolean Search concept is simple and effective. The concept
is mainly based on three operators. These are:
Boolean AND The AND operator when used in a search term, returns
result containing both the keywords. This can be illustrated
with the following example:
Club AND Football
The above search term will return all pages which include both
the keywords Club and football . However, it will not show
the pages containing only Club or football . Search engine
optimization specialist often suggests to use AND operator to
eliminate undesired results from searched information.
Boolean OR The Boolean OR operator will return all the pages
with at least one of the keywords. For example:
Club OR football
The above search condition will return all those pages where at
least the keyword Club or football can be found. Thus, the
result will include all pages with either the keyword club or
football or both.
Boolean NOT The Boolean NOT operator helps in removing a certain
keyword from the search. The NOT operator makes the search
engine to include pages containing the first keyword and exclude
all pages containing the second keyword. For example:
Club NOT football
Here, the search result will include all the pages with the
keyword Club and the same time the result will not include any
page with the keyword football . This methodology actually
helps in filtering information containing closely related
keywords.
Most of the sear
ch engine optimization companies suggest on formulating a
search strategy using the Boolean operators. These are:
- Identifying the search concept.
- Finding alternatives and
synonyms.
- Forming a group with these synonyms
- Connecting
synonyms with AND
- Connecting these AND groups with OR and
NOT operators.
